Old Dog New Tricks: A Tribute to Utah's Ska Legends

New Single Release: March 29th, 2024

On Friday, March 29th, 2024, at 12:00am, a new single titled "Old Dog New Tricks" will be released.

This upbeat ska track is a vibrant homage to the local ska bands of Utah during the 1990's, a time when Utah was once hailed as "the ska capital of the world."

The song features a few legendary musicians such as Rick Anderson of Swim Herschel Swim on guitar and bass, Zach Craigle of Insatiable on sax, Matt Allen on trumpet and vocals, Zak Davis vocalist, who were both members of Catfische. And with Mike Lomax on drums, and Mike Olesko on percussion, all four came from Hoo Ray Who?

This lineup played a part in the movement along with some other legendary local bands at the time such as Stretch Armstrong, Model Citizen, General Sturgeon, Arrogant, and many more I fail to mention.

Each of these bands played a significant role in shaping the ska movement of the time, and their influence is palpable in the energetic rhythms and catchy melodies of "Old Dog New Tricks."

The lyrics of the song pay tribute to these bands and the vibrant ska scene of the past. It's a nostalgic journey back to a time of skankin' rhythms and brass sections, a time when these bands seemed to be the heartbeat of Utah's music scene.

Now... while the local ska scene may not be what it once was, it continues to thrive with a new generation of artists. Bands like The Makeways, The Anchorage, and (yours truly) Z Frequency are just a few new artists that are carrying the torch forward, infusing the ska genre with their unique styles and perspectives.

In conclusion, "Old Dog New Tricks" is more than just a single music release. It's a celebration of Utah's ska history, a tribute to its legends, and a "pick it up, pick it up" for its future. So, mark your calendars for March 29th, and get ready to skank to the rhythms of "Old Dog New Tricks
